RITTENHOUSE.-On the morning of the 2d of August, after a long and
painful illness, which he bore with Christian fortitude,
Mr. PETER L. RITTENHOUSE, son of Godfrey and the late Mary Ann
Rittenhouse, in the 25th year of his age.
Dearest husband, thou hast left me,
And thy loss I deeply feel,
But 'tis God that hath bereft me,
He can all our sorrows heal.
No kisses drop upon our cheeks,
Those lips are sealed to me.
Dear Lord how could I give him up
To anyone but thee?
We saw his sufferings, heard his sighs,
With throbbing hears and weeping eyes;
But now he calmly sleeps at last.
All pain, all grief, all suffering past.
The relatives and friends of the family, also William Penn Lodge,
No. 39, K. of P., are respectfully invited to attend the
funeral, on Friday, the 5th inst., at 3 o'clock, P. M., from the
residence of his father, Mr. Godfrey Rittenhouse, No. 2227 German-
town ave. To proceed to Mechanics' Cemetery. | Rittenhouse, Peter L. (I4750)

Samuel Gilbert probably resided in Hartford until 1707 and moved with his father to Colchester then. There is a possibility that he went northward to Northfield or Deerfield, where he met his wife, Mercy Warner. After his marriage he settled in the town of Lebanon. His children were baptized by the pastor at Lebanon until 1717. About this time he moved to Gilead parish of Hebron and remained there the rest of his life. He was appointed Ensign of the North Company of Trainband in the town of Hebron in 1745 and Captain of the Trainband in Gilead parish in 1749. His will dated September 20, 1754, mentions five sons and five daughters. He was a large landowner and had a large estate.
His family record begins before that of his father ends. Some have assigned to him Lydia, born September 4, 1707, and Mercy, born October 4, 1708. But in his will he mentions not a daughter Lydia or her heirs, hence we conclude that Abilena was his oldest child. There are other indications that this is the correct assignment.
June 22, 1712, Mercy, wife of Samuel Gilbert, publicly owned the covenant of Lebanon.

Samuel may have assisted his mother with taking care of an inn. He was a member of the militia. In October, 1698, he was commissioned Ensign of the North Train Band at Hartford. In July 1705, he sold land in Hartford to his brother, Thomas Gilbert of Boston, mariner. He sold the inn property in Hartford to Capt. Caleb Williamson. About the same time he leased to William Worthington a place on the highway running south from Wyllys Street in Hartford. Worthington bought the property in 1709 and kept an inn there until he moved to Colchester in 1717.
Perhaps about 1706, Ensign Gilbert moved his family to Colchester. In May 1707, he was confirmed Captain of the Train Band in Colchester. In 1709 he was Captain of a company in Colonel William Whiting's regiment in an expedition to Canada.
April 8, 1724, Capt. Samuel Gilbert, then of Lyme but late of Colchester, sold to Joseph Otis of Scituate, MA, "all my farm in Colchester, 280 acres." In the same month he gave or sold land to his son, Nathaniel Gilbert and moved to Paugwonk, within the limits of Lyme. Paugwonk was partly in colchester, partly in Lyme and became the town of Salem in 1803.
