- She carried a shillelagh or blackthorn stick when she landed in Boston. One of the immigration officers asked if she were fighting the Boers, so it may have been during the Boer War. Before leaving Ireland, she had an Irish wake, a custom that has continued far into the 20th century. The reason was that most who left Ireland never returned in those days. Julia was never able to afford a trip back to Ireland. She spoke of sorrow of leaving and of how those aboard the ship turned to look back, singing "Tho the last glimpse of Erin with sorrow I see".

Notes |
- Lived on a farm in Ireland. From Anecdotal information, it appears there were about eight children in the family and she was near the middle.
- For some time before she left for America, Julia worked at a rectory to aquire the skills she would need as a domestic in Massachusetts.
- When she arrived in Boston, an aunt of hers helped her find a job. She seemed to like the families she worked for but life must have been hard. She slept in an unheated attic room, where the water in her pitcher froze at night and she slept so soundly that she put a tin plate under her alrm clock to make it noisier. she had contact with the children of her employers, learning how children were reared in wealthy American families; she applied these standards to her own children & grandchildren. Her manners & bearing were impecable and one would never have known of her humble origins because she had such beautiful manners.
