        Deceased Name: MICHAEL O'BRIEN\\ RETIRED POLICE CAPTAIN, 77
        A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in St. Theresa's Church, West Roxbury, for Michael F. O'Brien, 77, a former Boston Police captain. He died Wednesday in the Sharon Manor Nursing Home after a long illness.

        Mr. O'Brien joined the police department on April 2, 1937, and was first assigned to the old District 16 on Boylston street. On Sept. 19, 1947, he was promoted to sergeant and transferred to the old District 15 in Charlestown.

        Mr. O'Brien, who worked in various other police districts, was promoted to lieutenant in January 1951 and to captain in August 1960. In 1973, he joined the Bureau of Field Services, where he remained until his retirement on Feb. 8, 1975.

        Mr. O'Brien was presented with the department Medal of Honor on Dec. 3, 1941, for arresting a man who attempted to criminally assault a young woman in her home in the South End.

        Mr. O'Brien was born in Boston and attended Boston public schools.

        He was a member of the Superior Officers Federation, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Assn., and the Emerald Society of the Boston Police. Mr. O'Brien was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1331, the American Legion Post 251 and the American Veterans C.A. Dantone Post 13, Boston.

        Burial will be in Mt. Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury.
